Group Play – What does Cruising mean?
Cruising
Cruising is looking for casual, often anonymous sex in parks, saunas, rest stops or other semi-public places, a practice with deep roots in gay culture.
What does Cruising mean?
Cruising comes from the English verb “to cruise”, to drift around slowly and look about. In gay slang it has meant looking for sex partners for many decades, and today it describes searching for casual sex in parks, saunas or other semi-public places. For a long time, cruising was one of the few ways gay and bi men could meet at all. Eye contact or a certain spot in a park did the talking. Today a lot of the first contact also happens through apps.
Is cruising legal?
Looking for sex isn’t illegal, but sex in public places often is. Laws on public sex and indecent exposure apply, and they differ from country to country. Passers-by, families or joggers did not agree to see anything, so keep it out of sight or move somewhere private. Many people use cruising spots only to meet and then head home or to a sauna.
How do you go cruising safely?
Tell a friend where you’re going and when you plan to be back. Bring condoms, think about PrEP, and get tested for STIs regularly. If you meet through an app, check the profile first and meet somewhere busy before going anywhere private. Trust your gut and leave if something feels off. Consent counts here too, a no or no reaction means no.
