Kink Talk – What does Nesting Partner mean?
Nesting Partner
A nesting partner is the partner you live with and share a home and daily life with, a term mostly used in polyamorous and other non-monogamous relationships.
What does Nesting Partner mean?
Nesting Partner borrows the image of birds building a nest together and comes from the polyamory community. It means the partner you live with and share a home and daily life with. A nesting partner isn’t automatically the most important partner. Some people live with one partner but treat all their relationships as equal, others live with nobody at all. The term simply describes the shared household, not a ranking.
Is a nesting partner the same as a primary partner?
Not necessarily. Nesting describes where you live, primary describes a hierarchy. Many people’s nesting partner is also their primary, but some live with a partner who isn’t, and non-hierarchical polyamorous people avoid the word primary altogether. Saying “nesting partner” lets you describe the living situation without implying a ranking.
Can you have more than one nesting partner?
Yes. Some polyamorous households include three or more adults who all live together as partners. It takes clear agreements about space, money, chores and privacy, just like any shared home, plus extra thought about dates and alone time. Good communication matters even more when a breakup could affect the whole household.
