BDSM Roles – What does Side mean?
Side
Side is a label for gay or bi men who enjoy sex and intimacy without anal penetration, preferring things like oral sex, kissing, mutual touching or rubbing.
What does Side mean?
Side comes from gay community slang and is meant as a third option next to top and bottom. It describes gay or bi men who enjoy sex and intimacy without anal penetration. Sides might love oral sex, kissing, making out, mutual masturbation or rubbing against each other. The label helps men who felt pressured to pick top or bottom, since anal sex is often treated as the default in gay sex.
Is being a side normal?
Yes. Plenty of gay and bi men don’t enjoy anal sex, or only rarely, and that’s a completely normal preference. Sex is far more than one act. If you’re side, saying so early on a date or in your profile saves awkward moments and helps you find partners who want the same things. Some people are side for life, others for a phase.
Is side sex safer?
It carries a lower risk for some STIs, including HIV, than anal sex, but it isn’t risk-free. Infections like gonorrhoea, syphilis, herpes and HPV can spread through oral sex and skin contact. Regular STI testing, open talk about status and condoms or dental dams for oral sex keep the risk low.
