Relationship Styles – What does Ethical Non-Monogamy mean?
Ethical Non-Monogamy
Ethical non-monogamy, or ENM, is the umbrella term for all relationship styles with more than one partner where everyone knows and agrees.
What does ethical non-monogamy mean?
The word “ethical” sets it apart from cheating: non-monogamy, but honest. The 1997 book “The Ethical Slut” helped make the idea popular. Ethical non-monogamy, or ENM, is the umbrella term for all relationship styles with more than one partner where everyone knows and agrees. Polyamory, open relationships, swinging and relationship anarchy all fall under it. Some people prefer “consensual non-monogamy” (CNM).
What’s the difference between ENM and polyamory?
ENM is the umbrella, polyamory is one style under it. Polyamory is about several loving relationships; ENM also includes styles that are only about sex, like swinging. So every poly person practices ENM, but not everyone in ENM is poly.
Is ethical non-monogamy healthy?
It can be as healthy as monogamy. It depends on honesty, communication and how well people look after each other, not on the number of partners. Safer sex and regular STI tests matter more when more people are involved.
