Sex Positions – What does Lotus Position mean?
Lotus Position
The Lotus Position is a seated sex position where partners sit face to face, one in the other’s lap, wrapped closely around each other.
What does Lotus Position mean?
The Lotus Position borrows its name from the cross-legged lotus seat of yoga and meditation, since the lower partner usually sits cross-legged. In Tibetan Buddhist art the same embrace is called yab-yum, literally “father-mother”. Partners sit face to face, one in the other’s lap, arms and legs wrapped around each other. It’s closely linked to tantra and slow sex. The point isn’t speed, it’s closeness, skin contact and staying connected.
How do you do the Lotus Position?
The lower partner sits cross-legged or with legs loosely stretched out, and the other sits in their lap facing them, legs wrapped around their back. Instead of thrusting, you rock slowly together, which builds tension gently. Pillows behind the back or under the hips make it comfortable, and leaning against a headboard helps if flexibility is limited.
Why is the Lotus Position so intimate?
Because you’re face to face and chest to chest, with nowhere to hide. Eye contact comes naturally, and many couples try to breathe in sync, which can feel surprisingly intense. Since the movements are small, it’s less about climax and more about feeling close. It’s a lovely way to slow down, or a starting point for exploring tantra together.
