Kink Talk – What does Love Bombing mean?
Love Bombing
Love Bombing is overwhelming someone with affection, compliments and attention early on, so fast and intensely that it creates dependence and makes control easier.
What does Love Bombing mean?
Love bombing was first used in the 1970s to describe how some cults won over new members with a flood of warmth and attention. Today it means overwhelming someone with affection early on to gain control over them. At first it feels like a dream, with constant messages, big gifts and “I’ve never felt this way” after a week. Later the warmth gets switched off whenever you don’t do what they want. It’s widely seen as a red flag linked to manipulative and abusive relationships.
What’s the difference between love bombing and NRE?
NRE, new relationship energy, is genuine excitement that still respects your pace. Love bombing comes with pressure. Watch for speed, guilt and how they react to a boundary. If “I need to slow down” gets you sulking, anger or even more pressure, that’s more than a crush. Someone who is truly smitten can be over the moon and still give you space.
What does love bombing look like in kink?
A classic example is someone offering to collar you after a week, before you’ve even talked about limits. Big promises of devotion, pushing for intense scenes early or making you feel guilty for wanting to go slow are all warning signs. Real D/s builds trust over time. A good Dom or partner is happy to wait, talk and check in.
