Kink Talk – What does Mile High Club mean?
Mile High Club
The Mile High Club is slang for people who have had sex on a plane, a joke “membership” with no real club, rules or card behind it.
What does Mile High Club mean?
Mile High Club refers to altitude. A mile is about 1.6 kilometres, and planes cruise far above that. “Joining” is a joke for having had sex on a plane, and there’s no actual membership. The idea looks far more glamorous in films and jokes than in real life. In practice it usually means a cramped airplane toilet, a queue outside the door and very little privacy.
Is joining the Mile High Club legal?
Usually not. Crew and other passengers did not consent to being involved, and sex in a public space like a plane can break laws on public indecency. Airlines can also treat it as disruptive behaviour, which can lead to police involvement, fines or a ban from the airline. Rules differ by country and airline, but the risk is real.
Why is the Mile High Club so famous?
Mostly because it’s a fantasy of thrill and secrecy, with a catchy name that turned it into a pop culture joke. For many, the appeal is the risk of getting caught, which is close to exhibitionism. If that’s your thing, it’s safer and fairer to play with it in private, for example as a roleplay at home, where nobody is involved without saying yes.
