Orientations & Identities – What does quoiromantic mean?
Quoiromantic
Quoiromantic describes someone who can’t tell, or doesn’t relate to, the line between romantic and platonic feelings, so the usual idea of a crush may not fit.
What does quoiromantic mean?
Quoiromantic comes from the French “quoi”, meaning what, as in “what even is romantic attraction?”, and came from online aromantic communities in the 2010s, where it was first also called WTFromantic. It describes someone who can’t tell, or doesn’t relate to, the line between romantic and platonic feelings. It sits on the aromantic spectrum, but not everyone who uses it identifies as aromantic. Some quoiromantic people feel strong attachment without knowing what to call it. Others find the split into romantic and platonic simply doesn’t make sense to them. Many shorten it to quoiro.
What’s the difference between quoiromantic and aromantic?
Aromantic means feeling little or no romantic attraction, quoiromantic means not being able to tell whether a feeling is romantic in the first place. So aromantic answers “how much”, while quoiromantic questions the category itself. The two can overlap, and some people use both labels together. Others feel quoiromantic fits better precisely because they can’t say they feel nothing.
Can quoiromantic people be in relationships?
Yes, in any form they choose. Some are in romantic relationships, others in queerplatonic ones, close friendships or something without a name. What matters is what they actually want, the closeness, commitment and everyday life they’re after, not which box the feelings fit in. Talking openly with a partner about what each of you needs works better than forcing a label onto it.
