Orientations & Identities – What does aroace mean?
Aroace
Aroace describes people who are both aromantic and asexual, meaning they feel little or no romantic attraction and little or no sexual attraction.
What does aroace mean?
Aroace is a blend of “aromantic” and “asexual” and comes from the ace community. It describes people who feel little or no romantic attraction and little or no sexual attraction. Both parts are spectrums, so some aroace people feel a bit of attraction now and then or only under certain conditions, others none at all. It describes attraction, not how much someone cares about the people in their life.
Can aroace people have relationships?
Yes. Aroace people can have deep friendships, chosen family, partners and long-term commitments. Some form a queerplatonic relationship, a close, committed bond that is neither classic romance nor just friendship. Some happily live alone, others share a home or raise kids. What counts is what the people involved agree on.
Is aroace the same as asexual?
Not quite. Asexual is only about sexual attraction, aromantic is only about romantic attraction. Many asexual people still fall in love, and many aromantic people still feel sexual attraction. Aroace means both apply at once. Some aroace people shorten it to aro or ace, depending on which part feels more central to them.
