Relationship Styles – What does Relationship Escalator mean?
Relationship Escalator
The Relationship Escalator is the default script many people expect a relationship to follow, from dating to exclusivity, moving in, marriage and kids, always moving up.
What does Relationship Escalator mean?
The term comes from polyamory circles and was popularised by the writer Amy Gahran, who compared the usual path of a relationship to an escalator that only goes one way. It describes the default script of dating, exclusivity, moving in, marriage and kids. On the escalator, every step counts as progress, and stopping or stepping off counts as failure. Naming it helps people see that this path is one option, not the only measure of a “real” relationship.
What does getting off the relationship escalator mean?
It means choosing the steps you actually want instead of taking the whole package. Some couples love each other but keep separate homes, known as Living Apart Together. Others skip marriage or kids, stay non-exclusive, or practise solo poly, having relationships without merging their life with anyone. Relationship anarchy goes furthest and drops default rules altogether.
Is the relationship escalator bad?
No. It’s a great fit for many people, as long as they chose it. The trouble starts when you ride it on autopilot because that’s what everyone does, or when partners want different things and never say so. Talking openly about which steps matter to you, and in what order, makes any path work better.
