BDSM Roles – What does Rigger mean?
Rigger
A rigger is the person who ties in rope bondage, designing and tying the patterns and taking responsibility for their partner’s safety while they’re bound.
What does Rigger mean?
Rigger is borrowed from sailing and stage work, where a rigger is someone who handles ropes and rigging. In rope bondage, the rigger is the one who ties, from simple wrist ties to full Shibari suspensions. Rigging is a skill, part craft and part connection. Many riggers love the focus, the aesthetics and the trust it takes for someone to let themselves be bound.
How do you tie someone up safely?
Never put rope around the neck, and keep safety shears within reach at all times. Avoid tight wraps over the inner upper arm and the wrists, where nerves run close to the skin. Check often for numbness, tingling, cold or color changes, and untie at once if they appear. Never leave a bound person alone, and leave suspension until you’ve had proper training.
How do you learn rope bondage?
Start with a single column tie and a double column tie, practiced on a willing partner or even on your own leg. Workshops, rope jams and experienced riggers are the best teachers, because rope safety is easiest to learn hands on. Use soft bondage rope made of natural or synthetic fiber, not rough hardware store rope, and keep early scenes short and on the floor.
