What does Rope mean?
Rope is an old word that goes back to the Old English “rāp”, and in kink it stands for rope bondage. It’s used for tying and restraining, with basic knots or intricate patterns. Some people love the helpless feeling of being tied, others the craft and closeness of tying. It ranges from a quick wrist tie during sex to Japanese-inspired shibari, where the patterns and the process are the point. Common materials are jute, hemp, cotton and synthetic rope.
How do you do rope bondage safely?
Keep safety shears within reach and never leave a tied person alone. Never tie anything around the neck, and avoid joints and spots where nerves run close to the surface, like the inner upper arm and the wrist. Check often for numbness, tingling, cold or discolored skin, and untie right away if they show up. You should be able to slide two fingers under the rope.
What rope is best for beginners?
Soft cotton or synthetic rope is a good start, since it’s easy to handle, washable and gentle on skin. Jute and hemp are the shibari classics with more grip, but they need to be conditioned first. About 6 mm thick and 7 to 8 meters long is a common size. Not sure your partner is into it? Rope only shows up as a match in the Consent Check if you both said yes.
