Kink Talk – What does Sex-Positive mean?
Sex-Positive
Sex-positive describes an attitude that sees consensual sex, kink and every sexual identity as a healthy part of life, free from shame and judgment.
What does sex-positive mean?
Sex-positive is a plain English compound of “sex” and “positive”, and it spread widely through sex-positive feminism from the 1980s on. It describes an attitude that sees consensual sex and kink as healthy, without shame. Being sex-positive is about respect, not about doing more. It means talking openly about sex, getting good information and not judging what other adults consensually enjoy, from vanilla to very kinky.
Does sex-positive mean having lots of sex?
No. Sex-positive is about attitude, not about how much sex you have. Asexual people, people who rarely want sex and people who often say no can be fully sex-positive. Saying no is part of it, because the whole idea only works when every yes is freely given.
What role does consent play in sex positivity?
Consent is the core. Sex positivity celebrates what adults freely choose, never pressure or crossed boundaries. That’s why sex-positive spaces, from parties to online communities, usually have clear rules like asking before touching and taking a no seriously. Openness without consent isn’t sex-positive, it’s just pushy.
