Kink Talk – What does Consent mean?
Consent
Consent is a clear, freely given yes to a specific sexual or kink activity, which anyone involved can take back at any time.
What does Consent mean?
Consent comes from the Latin “consentire”, literally “to feel together”, meaning to agree. In sex and kink, consent is a clear, freely given yes to a specific activity, which can be taken back at any time. Silence, no resistance or a yes to something else is not consent. People who are asleep, passed out or too drunk or high to decide cannot consent. A yes to kissing isn’t a yes to everything, and a yes last week isn’t automatically a yes today.
How do you ask for consent?
Just ask, simply and specifically. “Do you want this?”, “Is this okay?” or “Want me to keep going?” work fine and don’t kill the mood. Then listen to the answer and watch body language. A hesitant “I guess” or freezing up is not a yes. Before kink, talk things through in advance, agree on limits and a safe word, and keep checking in while you play.
Can consent be taken back?
Yes, at any moment, even in the middle of something you both wanted. When someone says stop or uses a safe word, you stop right away. Changing your mind needs no reason and no apology. The respectful reaction is to pause, check in calmly and make sure your partner is okay, without any guilt-tripping. A yes that can’t be taken back isn’t real consent.
