BDSM Roles – What does Switch mean?
Switch
A switch is someone who enjoys both the dominant and the submissive side, or both top and bottom, depending on the partner, the mood or the scene.
What does Switch mean?
Switch comes from the everyday English word for changing from one thing to another, and the BDSM community uses it for people who move between roles. A switch enjoys both the dominant and the submissive side, depending on partner or mood. Some switch within one scene, others are Dom with one partner and sub with another. Some lean more to one side but enjoy the other now and then.
How do you know if you’re a switch?
If both sides excite you, you may be a switch. Maybe you love being in charge but sometimes crave being tied up, or your role depends on who you’re with. There’s no test you have to pass. Try both with a partner you trust and notice what feels good. Labels are tools, not rules.
How do two switches play together?
Two switches agree before the scene who leads this time, or they take turns. Some flip a coin, some pick by mood, some swap halfway through on a signal. Talk about it upfront so nobody is left guessing, keep the same safe word whoever is in charge, and make sure both of you get aftercare.
