Kink Talk – What does Algospeak mean?
Algospeak
Algospeak is coded language, like “seggs” for sex or “corn” for porn, that people use on social media to avoid having their posts hidden, demonetised or removed by automated moderation.
What does Algospeak mean?
Algospeak blends “algorithm” and “speak”. The word spread around 2022, mostly through TikTok, where creators noticed that videos with certain words got less reach. Algospeak is coded language that dodges automated filters. Common examples: “seggs” or “s3x” for sex, “corn” or the corn emoji for porn, “le dollar bean” for lesbian and “unalive” for death. It started with sex and sensitive topics and is now part of everyday internet slang.
Why do people use algospeak?
Because platforms use automated systems that can push down, age-restrict or delete content with sexual or sensitive words, even when the content is educational. Sex educators, queer creators and sex workers are hit especially often, so they invented workarounds. The catch: filters learn the new words too, so the code keeps changing, and people outside the bubble sometimes don’t understand it.
Is algospeak a problem?
It’s a creative fix, but it has downsides. Turning sex into “seggs” can make normal topics sound shameful or childish, and it makes sex education harder to find. It can also hide harmful content from moderators. If you’re explaining something important, like consent or safer sex, clear words are usually worth the reach you might lose.
