Kink Talk – What does Sex Work mean?
Sex Work
Sex Work is selling sexual services or erotic performances as a job, from escorting and camming to stripping and professional domination, between consenting adults.
What does Sex Work mean?
The term sex work is usually credited to the US activist Carol Leigh, who used it from the late 1970s on to describe selling sex as labour rather than a moral failing. It covers many jobs, from escorts and brothel work to camming, phone sex, stripping and professional dominatrices. What they share is that adults offer sexual services or performances in exchange for money.
Is sex work legal in Germany?
Yes, for adults it is legal and regulated. Since 2002, selling sex is no longer considered immoral under German law, and since 2017 the Prostitutes Protection Act requires sex workers to register and attend health counselling, while businesses need a permit. Condoms are mandatory for sexual services in Germany. Forced prostitution, human trafficking and exploitation are serious crimes. Laws differ a lot between countries, so the rules elsewhere can be very different.
How do you treat sex workers with respect?
Treat it as work. Respect the boundaries, prices and rules a sex worker sets, never haggle about consent and don’t ask for anything that wasn’t agreed. Say sex worker instead of using slurs, keep their real identity private and don’t shame anyone for the job. If someone seems to be working under pressure or someone else’s control, contact the police or a counselling service.
