Orientations & Identities – What does monosexual mean?
Monosexual
Monosexual describes people who are attracted to only one gender, such as most straight, gay and lesbian people, as opposed to bi, pan and other plurisexual people.
What does monosexual mean?
Monosexual combines the Greek “monos”, meaning single or alone, with sexual. It describes people who are attracted to only one gender, which includes most straight, gay and lesbian people. Hardly anyone uses it as a personal label. The word comes from bisexual activism, where it’s useful as the counterpart to plurisexual, an umbrella for orientations with attraction to more than one gender.
What is monosexism?
Monosexism is the assumption that everyone is attracted to one gender only, and that bi or pan people are confused, greedy or just going through a phase. It comes from straight and gay spaces alike. It shows up as bi erasure, as the idea that a bi woman with a man is “straight now”, or as advice to finally pick a side.
Can monosexual people be fluid?
Yes. Monosexual describes your attraction now, not a lifelong promise. Attraction can shift over time. Some people who felt monosexual for years later realise they’re bi, pan or sexually fluid, or the other way around. Whatever fits now is valid, and changing your label later doesn’t make the earlier one a lie.
