What does heterosexual mean?
Heterosexual comes from the Greek “heteros”, meaning other or different. Heterosexual, or straight, means being attracted to people of a different gender, most often men to women and women to men. It’s the most common orientation, which is exactly why hardly anyone says it out loud. Hetero is the short form you’ll hear in German and in casual chats.
Is heterosexual the same as cisgender?
No, and they’re often mixed up. Heterosexual is about who you’re attracted to. Cisgender is about your own gender: it means you identify with the gender you were assigned at birth. So a trans woman who loves men is straight, and a cis man can be gay. The two words describe different things and combine freely.
Can a straight person be curious about the same gender?
Sure. A crush, a fantasy or a curious kiss doesn’t cancel a label. If the curiosity keeps knocking, words like heteroflexible or bi-curious might feel closer. Or not. You decide what fits.
