Kink Talk – What does Catfishing mean?
Catfishing
Catfishing is using a fake online identity, often with stolen photos and an invented life story, to lure someone into a relationship, a scam or both.
What does Catfishing mean?
Catfishing comes from the 2010 documentary “Catfish”, about an online romance with someone who turned out to be a very different person. It means using a fake online identity to lure someone into a relationship or a scam. Some catfishers want money, some want attention or revenge, and some are lonely and hide behind a nicer picture. Either way, the person on the other side invests real feelings in someone who doesn’t exist.
How can you tell if you’re being catfished?
The biggest sign is someone who always has a reason not to video call or meet. Other red flags are photos that look too perfect or like a model shoot, very few friends or posts on their profile, a life story full of drama, love bombing early on, and sooner or later a request for money or gift cards. If something feels off, trust that feeling.
How do you protect yourself from catfishing?
Ask for a short video call early, before feelings run deep. Run their photos through a reverse image search to see if they show up under other names. Never send money to someone you haven’t met. Meet in a public place, tell a friend where you are and set up a safe call. Be careful with nudes too, since fake profiles are a common start for sextortion.
