What does Romance Scam mean?
Romance scam combines “romance” with “scam”, the English slang word for a con or fraud. It’s a con where a fake online love interest builds trust, often over weeks or months, to get your money. A newer variant is called pig butchering, a translation of a Chinese term, because the victim is “fattened up” with attention before the money is taken. It often starts with a seemingly misdirected message and ends with crypto “investment” tips.
How do you spot a romance scam?
Watch for someone who avoids video calls, falls in love very quickly and soon has an emergency that only money can fix. Other signs are photos that look too polished, stories that don’t add up, pressure to move to another chat app, and tips about crypto or trading platforms. A reverse image search often shows the pictures belong to someone else. Talking to a friend you trust helps too, because an outside view sees what feelings hide.
What should you do if you’ve been scammed?
Stop sending money right away, and don’t blame yourself. These cons are run by professionals, and it can happen to anyone. Keep the chats, payment receipts and profile details, then report it to the police and to the platform where you met. Tell your bank quickly, because sometimes payments can still be stopped. Be wary of anyone who later offers to recover your money for a fee. That’s often the next scam.
