Orientations & Identities – What does circuit party mean?
Circuit Party
A Circuit Party is a large dance event aimed mainly at gay and bi men, with big-name DJs and themed nights, often running over several days in cities around the world.
What does Circuit Party mean?
The name comes from the “circuit” of events that partygoers travel to, one city after another, throughout the year. A Circuit Party is a large dance event mainly for gay and bi men, often stretched over a weekend with several themed parties. The scene grew in the US in the 1980s and 90s, partly from fundraisers during the AIDS crisis. Today circuit parties take place worldwide, often tied to Pride weeks, with big sound systems, house and techno, and lots of shirtless dancing.
Are circuit parties safe?
They can be a joyful space, but drug use is common in parts of the scene, including chemsex. Mixing substances, especially with alcohol or GHB, can be dangerous. If you go: drink water but don’t overdo it, take breaks, keep your drink in sight to avoid spiking, look out for your friends and know where first aid is. PrEP, condoms and regular STI testing are part of the plan for many guests.
What should I expect at my first circuit party?
Long nights, packed dance floors, themed dress codes and a mostly body-focused crowd. It can feel intense, especially if the gym look isn’t your thing. Go with friends, pace yourself and remember you don’t have to do anything you don’t want, from drugs to hookups. Consent applies on the dance floor and in the dark room too.
