Kink Talk – What does Circumcision mean?
Circumcision
Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin from the penis, done for medical, religious or cultural reasons, which leaves the glans permanently uncovered.
What does Circumcision mean?
Circumcision comes from the Latin “circumcidere”, to cut around. It means removing the foreskin, the fold of skin that covers the glans, so the head of the penis stays uncovered. Medical reasons are mainly a tight foreskin that can’t be pulled back, called phimosis, or repeated infections. It’s also a religious practice in Judaism and Islam and a cultural norm in some countries like the USA, while it’s rare in Germany. Estimates suggest roughly a third of men worldwide are circumcised.
Does circumcision change how sex feels?
Researchers still debate it. Some studies find small differences in sensitivity, others find none, and many report similar sexual satisfaction with or without a foreskin. What differs is handling. With a foreskin, the skin glides along, so a hand job may need less lube. Without one, more lube usually feels better, since the skin can’t move over the glans.
Does circumcision affect hygiene or safer sex?
Good hygiene is easy either way. With a foreskin, pull it back gently when washing and rinse with warm water. Without one, just wash as usual. Studies in Africa found that circumcision lowers the risk of some infections like HIV for men in vaginal sex, but it doesn’t replace condoms. Safer sex, testing and PrEP work the same for everyone.
