Kink Talk – What does Spiking mean?
Spiking
Spiking is secretly putting drugs or extra alcohol into someone’s drink, often to make them vulnerable to theft or sexual assault.
What does Spiking mean?
Spiking comes from the English slang “to spike a drink”, meaning to secretly add alcohol or drugs to it. It means slipping something into someone’s drink without their knowledge, often to make them vulnerable to theft or sexual assault. It can happen in clubs, bars, at parties or on a date, and to anyone of any gender. Someone who has been drugged cannot consent to sex, and whatever happens to them is never their fault.
What are the signs of being spiked?
The main sign is feeling far drunker than you should after what you’ve had. Watch for sudden dizziness, confusion, nausea, trouble speaking or moving, feeling very sleepy and memory gaps. These can hit fast, sometimes within minutes. If you notice this in a friend, don’t leave them alone and don’t let them go off with someone they just met.
What should you do if you think you’ve been spiked?
Tell a friend or the staff right away and get to a safe place with someone you trust. If you feel very unwell, get medical help or go to a hospital. Ask for a test as soon as possible, because some substances leave the body within hours. You can report it to the police. Keep your drink with you and look out for each other. And if it happens anyway, it’s never your fault.
