Kink Talk – What does Contraception mean?
Contraception
Contraception is any method used to prevent pregnancy, from condoms and the pill to IUDs, implants and permanent options like a vasectomy.
What does contraception mean?
Contraception combines the Latin “contra”, meaning against, with “conception”, the start of a pregnancy. It means any method used to prevent pregnancy, from condoms and the pill to IUDs. The main groups are barrier methods like condoms and diaphragms, hormonal methods like the pill, patch, ring, injection or implant, hormonal or copper IUDs, and permanent options like a vasectomy or sterilisation. Which one fits depends on your body, your health and your plans.
Which contraception also protects against STIs?
Only condoms, external or internal, protect against both pregnancy and many STIs. Every other method only prevents pregnancy. That’s why many people combine the pill or an IUD with condoms, at least with new partners or until both have been tested. Pulling out is not reliable contraception and offers no STI protection at all.
Who is responsible for contraception?
Everyone involved. Contraception is a shared responsibility, not just the job of the person who could get pregnant. Talk about it before sex, share the costs, bring condoms yourself and ask what your partner uses. A doctor, gynaecologist or family planning service can help you find the method that suits you, including options for people with a penis, like condoms or a vasectomy.
