Kink Talk – What does Morning-After Pill mean?
Morning-After Pill
The morning-after pill is emergency contraception you take as soon as possible after unprotected sex or a condom mishap, to help prevent a pregnancy.
What does morning-after pill mean?
The name comes from the idea of taking it the morning after sex, though it isn’t limited to the next morning. The morning-after pill is emergency contraception you take after unprotected sex, a slipped condom or a missed pill, to help prevent pregnancy. It mainly works by delaying ovulation. It doesn’t protect against STIs, so after unprotected sex with a new partner a test is a good idea too.
How long after sex does the morning-after pill work?
The sooner you take it, the better. Depending on the type, it can be taken up to about three or five days after sex. In Germany you’ve been able to get it at the pharmacy without a prescription since 2015, and the pharmacist can advise you. Another option is a copper IUD, which a doctor fits within a few days and which then keeps working as regular contraception.
Is the morning-after pill an abortion pill?
No. The morning-after pill works before a pregnancy begins, mainly by delaying ovulation. It doesn’t harm or end an existing pregnancy. A medical abortion uses completely different medication and only happens through a doctor. If your period is clearly late after taking the morning-after pill, do a pregnancy test and talk to your doctor.
