Kink Talk – Which contraception methods are there, and how reliable are they?
Contraception Methods
Contraception methods prevent pregnancy in different ways, from condoms and internal condoms to vasectomy, the pull-out method and the morning-after pill as a backup. Reliability ranges from over 99% for vasectomy, IUDs and implants to low for pulling out.
How do you compare how reliable a method is?
Experts use the Pearl Index: how many out of 100 people using a method for a year get pregnant. What counts most is typical use, with real-life mistakes. Condoms are about 98% effective with perfect use but around 87% with typical use. IUDs and implants stay above 99% either way. Only condoms and internal condoms also lower the risk of STIs.
When should you talk to a doctor?
A doctor or gynecologist helps you find a method that fits your body, health and life, and prescribes the pill, ring, implant or IUD. If a condom breaks, go to a pharmacy or doctor quickly, because the morning-after pill works best the sooner you take it.

6Condom
A condom is a thin sheath worn on a penis or a sex toy that protects against many STIs and pregnancy during vaginal, anal and oral sex.
Contraception
Contraception is any method used to prevent pregnancy, from condoms and the pill to IUDs, implants and permanent options like a vasectomy.
Internal Condom
An internal condom is a soft, latex-free pouch with flexible rings that is worn inside the vagina or anus, protecting against pregnancy and STIs during penetrative sex.
Morning-After Pill
The morning-after pill is emergency contraception you take as soon as possible after unprotected sex or a condom mishap, to help prevent a pregnancy.
Pull-Out Method
The pull-out method is a form of contraception in which the penis is withdrawn from the vagina before ejaculation, simple and free, but much less reliable than most other methods.
Vasectomy
A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure in which the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles are cut or sealed, making a person with a penis permanently infertile.
