What does Condom mean?
The origin of the word “condom” is uncertain. A popular story about a doctor named Condom is most likely a legend. A condom is a thin sheath worn on a penis or a toy that protects against many STIs and pregnancy. Most are made of latex. Latex-free versions made of polyurethane or polyisoprene exist for people with a latex allergy. There are also internal condoms, which are worn inside the vagina or anus instead of on a penis.
How do you use a condom correctly?
Put it on before any genital contact, pinch the tip to leave room, and roll it all the way down. Fit matters. Too tight can tear and too loose can slip, so try different sizes. With latex, use only water- or silicone-based lube, because oil breaks latex down. Hold the base when pulling out, and use a new condom every time, including when you switch between anal and vaginal sex.
Should you put condoms on sex toys?
Yes, if you share a toy. A fresh condom for each person, and for each switch from anal to vaginal, keeps infections from traveling along. It’s especially useful on porous toys that are hard to clean thoroughly. Swap the condom between partners rather than just wiping the toy, and still clean the toy properly afterwards.
