Orientations & Identities – What does demigirl & demiboy mean?
Demigirl & Demiboy
Demigirl and demiboy describe people who feel partly, but not fully, like a woman or a man, and both are identities under the non-binary umbrella.
What does demigirl & demiboy mean?
Demigirl and demiboy combine the French “demi”, meaning half, with girl or boy, and grew out of online non-binary communities. They describe people who feel partly, but not fully, like a woman or a man. The “girl” and “boy” are just the label form, and adults use these identities too. Some prefer demiwoman or demiman, and the umbrella term is demigender. A demigirl might feel partly female and partly something else, like agender or simply non-binary.
Is a demigirl non-binary?
Usually yes. Demigirl and demiboy are generally counted under the non-binary umbrella, since the person doesn’t feel fully like a woman or a man. But labels belong to the person using them. Some demigirls call themselves non-binary as well, some don’t. Pronouns vary too, from she or he to they or a mix, so ask instead of assuming.
What’s the difference between demigender and genderfluid?
Demigender is about a partial connection to one gender, genderfluid is about a gender that shifts over time. A demiboy feels partly male in a fairly steady way. A genderfluid person might feel more like a man one week and more like a woman or neither the next. Someone can also be both. Agender, by contrast, means feeling no gender at all.
