Orientations & Identities – What does genderfluid mean?
Genderfluid
Genderfluid describes people whose gender identity shifts over time, for example between man, woman, non-binary or something else, over days, months or years.
What does genderfluid mean?
Genderfluid combines “gender” with “fluid”, from the Latin “fluidus”, meaning flowing, and is used in queer communities as part of the non-binary umbrella. It describes people whose gender identity shifts over time instead of staying fixed. For some, the shifts happen within days, for others over months or years. A genderfluid person might feel more like a man one week and more like a woman the next, or move between non-binary feelings. Some change their style or pronouns along with it, some don’t.
What’s the difference between genderfluid and sexually fluid?
Genderfluid is about who you are, sexually fluid is about who you’re attracted to. A genderfluid person’s gender identity changes over time. A sexually fluid person’s attraction changes over time, for example drifting between women and men. The two can go together, but they don’t have to. Someone can be genderfluid with a steady orientation, or cis and sexually fluid.
Is genderfluid the same as non-binary?
Not exactly. Genderfluid is one way of being non-binary, and many genderfluid people use both words. Non-binary is the wide umbrella for any gender beyond only man or woman. Genderfluid adds that the gender moves. Some genderfluid people shift between man and woman and don’t call themselves non-binary at all, so the best guide is always how someone describes themselves.
