Orientations & Identities – What does demiromantic mean?
Demiromantic
Demiromantic describes people who only feel romantic attraction to someone after a close emotional bond has formed, often through friendship.
What does demiromantic mean?
Demiromantic combines the French “demi”, meaning half, with romantic, and was modelled on demisexual in the asexual and aromantic community. It describes people who only feel romantic attraction after a close emotional bond has formed. It sits on the aromantic spectrum. Crushes at first sight or falling for a stranger rarely happen. Instead, romantic feelings tend to grow slowly out of friendship, trust and time spent together.
What’s the difference between demiromantic and demisexual?
Demiromantic is about romantic feelings, demisexual is about sexual attraction. Both need a close bond first, but they don’t always come together. Someone can be demiromantic and feel sexual attraction more easily, or demisexual and fall in love quickly. Plenty of people are both, and some simply use one word for the whole picture.
How do I know if I’m demiromantic?
If you only ever fall for people you already know well and trust, the label may fit. Many demiromantic people notice it when friends gush about a new crush after one date and the feeling just doesn’t make sense to them. Demiromantic describes when romance happens, not with whom, so you can be demiromantic and gay, straight, bi or pan.
