Kink Talk – What does Enthusiastic Consent mean?
Enthusiastic Consent
Enthusiastic consent means looking for an eager, clear “yes!” from your partner, not just the absence of a no, before and during sex or kink.
What does Enthusiastic Consent mean?
Enthusiastic consent comes from sex education and anti-sexual-violence activism, as a step beyond the older slogan “No means no”. Its motto is “Yes means yes”, so you look for an eager, clear yes instead of just the absence of a no. The idea is simple. Sex and kink should be something everyone actively wants, not something they go along with or put up with. A shrug, silence or “fine, I guess” doesn’t count.
What does enthusiastic consent look like in practice?
It sounds like “Yes!”, “I’d love that” or “Don’t stop”, and it looks like someone leaning in, joining in and initiating too. You notice it in body language as much as in words, relaxed, engaged and responsive. If your partner goes quiet, tenses up or pulls back, pause and check in. Asking “Still good?” takes two seconds and keeps things hot, not awkward.
What’s the difference between “yes means yes” and “no means no”?
“No means no” puts the burden on the person who has to refuse. “Yes means yes” puts it on everyone to make sure there is a clear yes. That matters because people sometimes freeze, feel pressured or can’t say no easily. With enthusiastic consent, the absence of a no is never enough. You only go ahead when the yes is clear and freely given.
