Kink Talk – What does Erectile Dysfunction mean?
Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction, or ED, is regularly having trouble getting or keeping an erection firm enough for the sex you want, a common condition with physical, psychological or mixed causes.
What does Erectile Dysfunction mean?
Erectile dysfunction is the medical term that has largely replaced the older word impotence. It means regularly having trouble getting or keeping an erection firm enough for the sex you want, usually over several months, not just once. An occasional soft erection after drinking, or when you’re tired or nervous, is completely normal. ED becomes more common with age, but younger people get it too, often linked to stress or performance anxiety.
What causes erectile dysfunction?
An erection needs healthy blood vessels, nerves, hormones and a relaxed mind. Anything that affects one of them can play a role: heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, alcohol, some medications, low testosterone, stress or anxiety. Because ED can be an early warning sign of heart and vessel problems, it’s worth seeing a GP or urologist if it keeps happening. Effective treatments exist, from prescription medication and pumps to therapy for the mental side.
How can partners deal with erectile dysfunction?
Take the pressure off. Pressure is the enemy of erections, and blame or silence makes it worse. Remember that sex is much more than penetration. Hands, mouths, toys and outercourse all count, and once the focus moves from performance to pleasure, erections often return more easily. Talk about it as a shared topic, not as one person’s failure.
