Kink Talk – What does FRIES mean?
FRIES
FRIES is an acronym for consent that is Freely given, Reversible, Informed, Enthusiastic and Specific, a simple checklist for what real consent looks like.
What does FRIES mean?
FRIES is an acronym popularized by the US sexual health organization Planned Parenthood to explain consent in a way that’s easy to remember. It stands for Freely given, Reversible, Informed, Enthusiastic and Specific. It’s used in sex education, consent workshops and kink communities as a quick check. If any of the five is missing, it isn’t full consent.
What do the letters in FRIES stand for?
Freely given means no pressure, threats or manipulation, and nobody too drunk to decide. Reversible means anyone can change their mind at any time, even midway. Informed means you know what you’re agreeing to, including things like condom use or STI status. Enthusiastic means people actually want it, not just tolerate it. Specific means a yes to one thing isn’t a yes to everything else.
How is FRIES different from other consent models?
FRIES describes what consent itself should look like, while models like SSC or the 4Cs describe how to approach kink and risk as a whole. SSC stands for Safe, Sane and Consensual, and the 4Cs for Caring, Communication, Consent and Caution. They work well together. FRIES checks each single yes, the others frame the whole scene.
