Kinks & Fetishes – What does Furry mean?
Furry
A furry is a fan of animal characters with human traits, part of a fandom built around art, original characters, costumes and community, which for some also has a sexual side.
What does Furry mean?
Furry comes from the English word for “covered in fur”, and the fandom grew out of science-fiction and comic fan circles in the 1980s. A furry is a fan of animal characters with human traits, who walk, talk and have personalities. Most furries create a fursona, their own animal character, and share art, stories and meetups. Some wear full costumes called fursuits. For some it also has a sexual side, and the fandom word for furry erotica is “yiff”.
Is being a furry sexual?
Not necessarily. For most furries the fandom is about creativity, characters and friendship, not sex. Conventions are mostly about art, dances, panels and fursuit parades. Some furries do enjoy erotic art or roleplay, called yiff, and keep it in adult spaces. Both sides exist, and neither one defines the whole fandom.
What’s the difference between furries and pet play?
Furry is a fandom about animal characters with human traits. Pet play is a kink where an adult takes on the role of a pet, like a pup or kitten, inside a power dynamic. A furry may never do anything sexual with it, and a pup in pet play may not care about cartoon animals at all. Some people enjoy both, like a pup who also owns a fursuit, but they’re separate worlds with their own communities.
