BDSM Roles – What does Pup mean?
Pup
A pup is someone who takes on a playful dog role in pet play, with fetching, romping and craving praise from a handler or owner.
What does Pup mean?
Pup is short for puppy, and as a kink term it comes from the pup play scene, which grew largely out of the gay leather community. A pup is someone who takes on a playful dog role in pet play. In practice that can mean crawling, barking, chasing toys and being rewarded for good behavior. Many pups wear a hood, mitts or a collar, others need nothing but the right attitude. For most it’s about a headspace, simple, joyful and free of everyday worries. Knee pads help if you crawl a lot.
What’s the difference between a pup and a kitten?
Mostly the animal and the energy. Pups are usually bouncy, loyal and eager to please, while kittens tend to be cuddly with a streak of attitude. Both are forms of pet play, and both can be sexual or completely non-sexual. Some people switch between roles, others pick the one that fits their personality.
Is pup play sexual?
Not necessarily. For some pups it’s part of sex or a D/s dynamic, for others it’s a playful, social headspace with no sex involved at all. Pup communities hold meetups and contests where nothing sexual happens. What it means for you and a partner is something you agree on together, including what’s off limits and how to step out of the role.
