Kinks & Fetishes – What are hickeys?
Hickeys
Hickeys are reddish or purple marks left on the skin by sucking or nibbling, a visible and often playful sign of passion that fades within one to two weeks.
What are hickeys?
Hickey is American English slang, and where the word comes from is unclear. Hickeys are the reddish or purple marks left on the skin when a partner sucks or nibbles hard enough to break tiny blood vessels underneath. Medically they’re small bruises. For many people they’re also a little badge of honor, a visible sign of desire, sometimes with a possessive “you’re mine” edge.
How long does a hickey last?
Most hickeys fade within about one to two weeks, like any small bruise. They usually go from red to purple, then to a yellowish green before disappearing. A cold compress right after can limit the mark a little, and after a day or two gentle warmth may help it fade. Nothing makes them vanish overnight, so place them wisely.
How do you give a hickey safely?
Ask first and agree on where, because not everyone wants a visible mark at work or around family. Pick a soft spot like the side of the neck, the collarbone, the chest or the inner thigh, and suck gently for a short time, building up slowly. Avoid strong suction on the front of the throat, and stop if it really starts to hurt. Lower, hidden spots are a good option if discretion matters.
