Orientations & Identities – What does heteroromantic mean?
Heteroromantic
Heteroromantic describes people who feel romantic attraction to a gender other than their own, usually men to women or women to men, regardless of their sexual orientation.
What does heteroromantic mean?
Heteroromantic combines the Greek “heteros”, meaning other, with romantic. It describes people who fall in love with, and want romantic relationships with, people of a gender other than their own, usually men with women or women with men. The word comes from asexual and aromantic communities, where romantic and sexual attraction are often described separately. For most straight people the two line up, so they simply say straight.
Can you be heteroromantic but not heterosexual?
Yes. A heteroromantic asexual woman might want a romantic relationship with a man without feeling sexual attraction to anyone. A bisexual man could be sexually attracted to several genders but only fall in love with women. Separating the two kinds of attraction helps people describe experiences that “straight” or “bi” alone don’t capture.
Why use the word if most people are just straight?
Because for some people romantic and sexual attraction point in different directions, and they need a word for each. If yours line up, you don’t need the label at all. If they don’t, heteroromantic can be a relief, a name for something you may have felt for a long time.
