Kink Talk – What does Labia mean?
Labia
The labia are the outer and inner lips of the vulva, folds of skin that protect the vaginal and urethral openings, come in every shape, size and colour and are often very sensitive.
What are the labia?
Labia is Latin for “lips”, the plural of labium. The outer lips, labia majora, are fleshy, usually covered in pubic hair after puberty and cushion the vulva. The inner lips, labia minora, are thinner, hairless folds that surround the vaginal and urethral openings and meet at the clitoral hood. The inner lips are packed with nerve endings and swell and darken with arousal. That makes them an important part of pleasure, not just a frame around the vagina.
Are my labia normal?
Almost certainly yes. Inner lips often stick out beyond the outer ones, one side is often longer than the other, and colours range from pink to brown to almost black. Porn and airbrushed images show a very narrow range, often surgically altered or digitally edited, which makes many people think their own vulva looks wrong. See a doctor for pain, lumps, sores, persistent itching or changes you can’t explain, not for looking different from a picture.
How do you touch the labia during sex?
Start slow and broad. Stroke the outer lips, then gently trace the inner lips with wet fingers or your tongue, moving up toward the clitoris. Light tugging, sucking or rubbing them between your fingers can feel great for some and too much for others, so ask and watch reactions. For care, warm water is enough. Scented soaps, douches and harsh wipes can irritate the delicate skin.
