Kink Talk – What does Vulvodynia mean?
Vulvodynia
Vulvodynia is long-lasting pain, burning or soreness in the vulva for at least 3 months without a clear identifiable cause such as an infection or skin condition.
What does Vulvodynia mean?
Vulvodynia combines “vulva” with the Greek “odynē”, meaning pain. It describes pain, burning, stinging or rawness in the vulva that lasts at least 3 months, without a visible cause like an infection or skin disease. Some people feel pain only when touched, for example during sex, inserting a tampon or sitting on a bike. Others feel it constantly. It’s more common than many think, but often takes years to be diagnosed because the vulva looks normal.
What causes vulvodynia?
The exact cause is still not fully understood. Researchers think several factors play together: oversensitive nerves, a tense pelvic floor, earlier repeated infections, hormonal factors and how the nervous system processes pain. It is not imagined, not caused by poor hygiene and not a sexually transmitted infection. Stress and fear of pain can make it worse, but they don’t mean the pain is “just in your head”.
How is vulvodynia treated?
There’s rarely one quick fix, but many people get significant relief. Treatment often combines pelvic floor physiotherapy, local creams, medication that calms nerve pain, and psychological support or sex therapy. Look for a gynaecologist or clinic experienced with vulvar pain. Avoid irritants like scented products and tight clothing. With a partner, focus on what doesn’t hurt, and stop whenever it does.
