Kink Talk – What does Vulva mean?
Vulva
The vulva is the visible outer part of the genitals, including the mons, outer and inner labia, clitoral glans and hood, and the openings of the urethra and vagina.
What does Vulva mean?
Vulva is a Latin word that is often translated as wrapper or covering. It names the visible outer genitals: the mons pubis, the outer and inner labia, the clitoral glans and hood, the vestibule and the openings of the urethra and vagina. The vagina is only the inner canal that leads to the cervix. Calling everything “vagina” is common, but it skips the parts most involved in pleasure, especially the clitoris. Using the right word makes it easier to say what you like and to talk to a doctor.
Is my vulva normal?
Almost certainly, yes. Vulvas vary hugely in colour, size and shape. Inner labia are often longer than the outer ones, can be uneven and may be pink, brown, purple or darker. Porn and edited images show a narrow, often surgically or digitally altered ideal. Changes like new pain, sores, lumps, unusual discharge or persistent itching are worth checking with a gynaecologist, but a vulva that just looks different is normal.
How do you care for your vulva?
Less is more. Wash the vulva with warm water or a mild, unscented cleanser and never rinse inside the vagina, since it cleans itself. Breathable cotton underwear, peeing after sex and avoiding scented products help prevent irritation and infections. When shaving or waxing, go gently, use a fresh blade and give the skin breaks if it gets red or itchy.
