Kink Talk – What does Soft Ghosting mean?
Soft Ghosting
Soft ghosting is responding to someone’s messages only with a like, a reaction or an emoji, never a real reply, so the conversation quietly dies without being officially ended.
What does Soft Ghosting mean?
Soft ghosting is the gentler-looking cousin of ghosting. Instead of vanishing completely, the person reacts to your messages with a heart, a thumbs up or an emoji, but never writes back. It became dating slang in the late 2010s, as message reactions spread across apps. Technically they’re still there, so it feels less rude to them. For you it often means the same as ghosting, just slower: the conversation quietly dies without anyone officially ending it.
Is soft ghosting a sign someone isn’t interested?
Often, yes, especially if it’s a pattern. One emoji to a long message can just mean someone is busy, but if every question gets a like and no answer, interest is probably low. Some people use reactions to avoid conflict, others because they feel overwhelmed. Either way, you’re not getting real engagement, and that tells you something.
How do you respond to soft ghosting?
Ask once, clearly. Something like “Seems like you’re busy. Still keen to meet, or should we leave it?” gives the other person an easy way to answer honestly. If you get another heart, take it as a no and move on. And if you’re the one doing it: a short, kind message saying you’re not interested is fairer than an endless string of likes.
