Orientations & Identities – What do WLW and MLM mean?
WLW & MLM
WLW & MLM stand for “women loving women” and “men loving men”, inclusive umbrella terms for same-gender attraction and relationships, whatever someone’s exact orientation label.
What do WLW and MLM mean?
WLW and MLM are acronyms that spread on Tumblr and other online queer communities in the 2010s. WLW means “women loving women” and MLM means “men loving men”, both umbrella terms for same-gender attraction. They include lesbian, gay, bi, pan and queer people, cis and trans alike, and focus on who you love rather than a specific orientation label. Some nonbinary people use similar forms of their own. And yes, MLM also means multi-level marketing, but context usually makes it clear.
What’s the difference between WLW and lesbian?
Lesbian is an orientation, while WLW describes attraction or a relationship between women. So WLW includes lesbians, but also bi and pan women and any other woman who loves women. A bi woman in a relationship with a woman is in a WLW relationship without being a lesbian. The same logic applies to MLM and gay men.
Where are WLW and MLM used?
Mostly online, as tags on social media, in book communities like BookTok, in fandoms and on dating profiles. They’re handy when you want to describe a story, a couple or what you’re looking for without guessing anyone’s exact label. A book tagged WLW, for example, is about love between women, however the characters end up describing themselves.
