Orientations & Identities – What does xenogender mean?
Xenogender
Xenogender is an umbrella term for non-binary genders that people describe through concepts beyond woman and man, such as nature, animals, colours, sounds or feelings.
What does xenogender mean?
Xenogender comes from the Greek “xenos”, meaning foreign or strange. The term appeared around 2014 in online communities, especially on Tumblr. It describes genders that can’t be put into words through woman, man or a mix of both, so people use other images instead. Examples are stargender, felt as connected to stars or space, or catgender, felt as connected to cats. Xenogender falls under the non-binary umbrella, and many xenogender people say these images describe their inner sense of gender better than any human category.
Is xenogender meant seriously?
Yes, for the people who use it. It’s often mocked online, but it helps some people, including, by many accounts, neurodivergent people, describe an experience of gender that standard words miss. You don’t have to fully understand someone’s gender to respect it. Using the name and pronouns they ask for, sometimes neopronouns, is enough.
Is xenogender the same as otherkin?
No. Otherkin is about people who identify as partly or fully non-human. A catgender person doesn’t think they are a cat. They use the image of a cat to describe how their gender feels, the way a poem uses a metaphor. Mixing the two up is one of the most common misunderstandings.
