Kink Talk – What does Foreskin mean?
Foreskin
The foreskin is the movable fold of skin that covers and protects the head of the penis, slides back during an erection and is rich in sensitive nerve endings.
What is the foreskin?
Foreskin simply describes the skin in front of the penis head, and the medical term is prepuce, from Latin. It’s a double layer of skin that covers the glans when the penis is soft and usually slides back on its own during an erection. It keeps the glans moist and protected, and its inner side is very sensitive. Some people are circumcised, which means the foreskin was removed for religious, cultural or medical reasons. Circumcised and uncircumcised penises are both completely normal.
How do you care for a foreskin?
Gently pull it back and rinse underneath with warm water every day. Plain water is enough, scented soaps can irritate. Always slide the foreskin back into place afterwards. If it’s too tight to pull back, hurts, gets stuck behind the glans, or the skin is red and swollen, see a doctor or urologist. A foreskin stuck behind the glans is an emergency.
What should partners know about the foreskin during sex?
The foreskin glides along with your hand, so a handjob often needs less lube. Go gently: pulling it back too hard or too fast can hurt. Before putting on a condom, pull the foreskin back, then roll the condom down. During oral sex, many people enjoy attention to the rim of the glans and the inner skin of the foreskin. Just ask what feels good.
