Kink Talk – What does 4Cs mean?
4Cs
4Cs stands for Caring, Communication, Consent and Caution, a BDSM ethics framework that adds care for each other’s wellbeing to the classic focus on consent and safety.
What does 4Cs mean?
4Cs was proposed in the mid-2010s by researchers who study kink, as an update to the older mottos SSC and RACK. It stands for Caring, Communication, Consent and Caution, four values meant to guide every scene and relationship. Caring means genuine concern for each other, communication covers negotiation and check-ins, consent is freely given and can be withdrawn, and caution means knowing the risks and reducing them. Together they describe good kink, not just safe kink.
How are the 4Cs different from SSC and RACK?
The 4Cs add caring and communication to the conversation, which the older mottos leave unspoken. SSC and RACK mainly ask whether play is safe or risk-aware and agreed to. The 4Cs also ask how people treat each other before, during and after a scene. Aftercare, honest feedback and looking out for your partner become part of the ethics, not an extra.
How do you use the 4Cs in a scene?
Run through each C before you play, then keep all four in mind until well after it ends. Show care by asking how your partner feels today. Communicate limits, a safe word and how you’ll check in. Make sure consent is clear and can change at any moment. Use caution by learning the risks and keeping safety gear close. Aftercare and a follow-up talk close the loop.
