What does hierarchical polyamory mean?
Hierarchy comes from the Greek “hierarchia”, a ranked order. Hierarchical polyamory means having several partners, with one main partner, often called the primary, whose needs and plans come first. Other partners are secondaries: loved and real, but with clear limits on time, living together or big life decisions.
What’s a primary partner?
Your primary is the person your life is most tied to: often the one you live with, share money or kids with, and plan the future with. Some people now prefer softer words like anchor or nesting partner.
Is hierarchical polyamory unfair?
It can feel unfair to secondaries if the rules are hidden or decided over their heads. It works when everyone knows the setup from the start. Rules like a veto on new partners are the most debated part. Many poly people avoid them.
