Relationship Styles – What types of polyamory are there?
Types of Polyamory
Polyamory comes in many styles: hierarchical or non-hierarchical, solo poly, kitchen-table, garden-party or parallel, closed polyfidelity, and shapes like vees, triads, throuples and quads, each describing how partners rank and relate to each other.
How do the types of polyamory differ?
Some styles describe ranking: hierarchical poly has a primary partner, non-hierarchical poly and relationship anarchy don’t. Others describe how metamours relate, from kitchen-table, where everyone is close, to parallel, where partners barely meet. Then there are shapes: a vee, a triad or throuple, a quad or a whole polyfamily.
How do you find the right poly style?
Think about how much time, closeness and shared life you want with each partner, and how involved you want to be with metamours. Talk openly with everyone affected. Your style can change over time. What matters is that all partners know the setup and agree to it.
