Kink Talk – What does Stud mean?
Stud
Stud is a term for a masculine-presenting lesbian, rooted in Black and Latina lesbian communities in the US, close to butch but with its own culture.
What does Stud mean?
Stud as a lesbian identity comes from Black and Latina lesbian communities in the US. It describes a masculine-presenting lesbian, often with a masc style in clothes, hair and attitude. Outside queer spaces, “stud” is also general slang for an attractive, confident man, borrowed from the word for a breeding stallion. In lesbian culture, though, it’s an identity with its own history, style and community, and many studs carry it with real pride.
What’s the difference between a stud and a butch?
Both describe masculine-presenting lesbians, but they come from different communities. Butch is the older, broader term used across many lesbian scenes. Stud developed specifically in Black and Latina lesbian spaces, with its own fashion, language and social codes. Studs are often linked with streetwear and hip-hop style, but everyone fills the label in their own way. Some relate to both words, many clearly prefer one.
Who can use the word stud?
As a lesbian identity, stud is closely tied to Black and Latina queer culture, and many feel it belongs to those communities. If you’re outside them, “masc” or “butch” are the better words for yourself. For other people the rule is simple: call someone a stud if that’s what they call themselves. The everyday slang meaning for an attractive man is a separate thing and fine in that context.
