Kink Talk – What does Butch mean?
Butch
Butch describes a queer person, most often a lesbian, whose gender expression is masculine in style, look or attitude, as a proud identity of its own.
What does Butch mean?
Butch is English slang for a tough, masculine look, and lesbian communities have used it as an identity for decades, traditionally alongside femme. It describes a queer person, most often a lesbian, with a masculine expression. Being butch is about expression, not gender identity. Many butches are women, some are nonbinary or trans, and the word covers a wide range, from soft butch to stone butch.
Is butch an insult?
It used to be thrown around as one, and some people still use it that way. Within queer communities, though, butch is a proud, reclaimed identity. Whether it’s okay depends on who says it and how. Calling yourself butch is self-description. Labelling a stranger is not your call. When in doubt, use the words a person uses for themselves.
What’s the difference between butch and stone butch?
Butch describes a masculine expression. Stone butch adds something about sex, because a stone butch prefers to give pleasure and doesn’t want to be touched, or only in limited ways. Not every butch is stone, and how far it goes varies from person to person. Like any boundary, it’s something to ask about and respect, not to guess.
